Sometimes
I sneak out of bed before anyone else while it is still dark, throw on some
comfortable clothes, and walk down a
nearby road where there are open fields and look up at the stars. It's like
I'm the only one around. I observe things tha t
I never could a little later when
the sounds of automobiles, children and school buses have begun.

Recently, I was
a little late for my walk. Although it was still dark, there was a tinge
of orange light in the east. I was greeted by
a tremendous choir of
singing birds. I could not see them but they were roosting in the trees.
It was a privilege to overhear their offering of praise
to the Lord.
Lifting my
eyes to the still visible stars, I thought of the vastness of the heavens
and the greatness of God. These were the same stars
that the psalmist observed in Psalm 148, " Praise the Lord... sun and moon, praise Him,
all you shining stars... Let them praise
the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created... Praise the
Lord from the earth, you great
sea creatures... wild
animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the earth
and all nations, you princes and
all rulers on earth,
young men and maidens, old men and children. Let them praise the name of
the Lord, for His name alone
is exalted; His splendor
is above the earth and the heavens."
When is
the last time you took time to "Be still, and know that I am God;" ( Psalm 46:10). Shall we, the highest of His
creation allow the lower
forms to carry on their praise while we are distracted by issues and concerns
that are fleeting and not of eternal significance?
Shall we not
wake up and come back to what we were actually created for? He is a God
of great compassion. He loves you. He
desires to spend intimate
time with you and to heal your hurts. You can take your Bible and sneak
away to a quiet place
regularly and hear His
voice, learn of Him and be reconciled to Him. This great and awesome God
is your Creator and Father
and He wants to have
this kind of relationship with you, not just with some super saints, but
with simple people like you and me.
