She
was a simple Jewish girl not unlike other young virgins. One night, one
holy event, and her life and history itself
were changed forever. It was not because of anything she had done or
any special quality she possessed. That night God
came to call on her through His messenger, the angel Gabriel. He spoke
to her the word of
God and she believed the word was
from God and said, "yes".
In Luke 1:35, the angel
told Mary, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will overshadow
you, and for that reason the holy Offspring
shall be called the Son of God." The Bible, in James 1:21b, tells us, "...in humilit y
receive the word implanted, which is
able to save your souls." Because Mary did that, every one of us has that
opportunity also. She
received the word and the Son
of God was conceived in her womb.
The offer extended to each one of
us is for a similar conception in our hearts. In a parable, Jesus referred
to the word of God
as "seed" that is planted in the soil, and
to our hearts as the soil. (Luke 8) The "conception" comes about when that word is
united with faith in those who hear.
(Hebrews 4:2)
When we repent of our sins and capitulate our lives before
Him, dethrone ourselves
and enthrone Him as the Lord and
Savior of our lives, we receive what the Bible calls "eternal life". Eternal
life not only means that we will live on eternally, but
it also means that we receive the Spirit of Jesus
Christ within us to guide us and teach us and to give us power to live
a whole different quality
of life as well. As Mary did
not, neither can we earn it because of any inherent goodness in us, but
we receive it by grace
through faith as a free gift
from God. (Romans 6:23)
God gave Mary a choice, and
His messenger is sent to you today with this message and a choice for
you as well. Will you receive
Him and let Him plant His life in you today?
