When
the plane took off from Tulsa, the sunlight was brilliant, but
not far to the south I could see there were thick clouds. I continued to
watch out the window as our altitude was
leveled and the seat belt light went off. I was wrapped up in the sights
below when suddenly, outside, everything disappeared. As
I looked out the window I saw nothing, nothing but what must be the inside
of an enormous cloud.
Everything was gray-white.
I kept looking out the window expecting either
the cloud coverage to break up or for the plane to rise above the clouds
as I had experienced in the past. Nothing changed. A
thought flashed across my mind — the pilot was seeing exactly the
same thing I was seeing. This realization frightened
me. As I sat there, staring at the nothingness, there was a stirring inside
me that said:
"The pilot is now steering this plane by the instruments. He
knows that he can trust the instruments and that he will land in Dallas
exactly when and where he is supposed to. In the same
way, God knows the direction He wants your life to take. He knows exactly
how to guide you and the path to your
destination. He will not make a mistake. However, your part is to sit back
and rest, and totally trust Him to get you there. All
the anxiety you can work up will not change things in the least. Just trust
him."
The signals from the control tower were being sent out,
but if the plane was not equipped with the instrument panel, and if the
pilot was not qualified to read it, there would be a
disaster. The very same thing is true of our lives. We all need the Spirit
of God inside us for our journey through life. He is
to be our Guide, our Comforter, our Helper, and our Teacher. He searches
our hearts, knowing what God’s will is for us,
and He intercedes for us according to the will of God. (Romans 8:27)
How do we get God's Spirit in our lives? His Spirit comes to
live in us when by faith we repent of our sins and receive Jesus Christ
as our Savior and Lord. (Romans 8:9-10)
We are also told to be continually being filled with God's Spirit
in Ephesians 5:18. This comes through continually seeking Him
in His Word and through prayer and by obeying Him.
As we began our descent I could see the suburbs of Dallas
below. He had led me safely to the city in spite of the fact that I could
see nothing during most of the journey. His Word
says, "...we walk by faith and not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). He wants to guide you, walk with you and
protect you through your
life and to ultimately bring you to your eternal home in heaven. No matter
what kind of skies there are in your life today, Jesus
will take over and be your Pilot. Put your life in His hands today.
