Sarah
and Joshua had been married for ten years and were very much in love.
They spent much time together, taking long
walks, feeding the ducks at the lake and laughing a lot. One day while Joshua
was away, he received a call that Sarah
had been in a terrible accident. She was in critical condition.
As he walked into the hospital room, Joshua's heart
broke as he saw her with machines and tubes everywhere. The
doctor was at her side. "I'm so glad you're here. No one has
been able to arouse any kind of response from her. She
doesn't speak or show signs of recognition at all. It looks pretty
grim and we are hoping that she will recognize you," he
said.
Joshua tried different ways to get Sarah to respond. He tried
talking to her, visual contact, squeezing her hand, and stroking
her face. None of these brought acknowledgment.
Desperate to get through to her, Joshua even placed a tiny
amount of her favorite ice cream on the tip of a spoon and
touched it to Sarah's lips. His deep love for her caused him to continue
to try to find a way to get through to her that she was
loved and that he was there with her. He just knew that i f
he could communicate this to her she would be comforted and
perhaps it might even give her the strength to fight. There
had to be a way. He refused to give up.
One day he remembered a cologne, Sarah's favorite.
He splashed it liberally on his face, then went to her bedside and
embraced her. As he stood up, his heart almost jumped out
of his chest. He observed a single teardrop coursing its way
down her cheek. "Oh Sarah," he cried, "you do know I'm here.
I have found a way to get through to you. The fragrance of the
cologne has communicated my presence to you through
your sense of smell." That tiny communication of love led to
the eventual healing and total recovery of Sarah Shepherd. She
and Joshua now continue their walks, feed the ducks, and
enjoy LOTS of laughter.
Someone has been trying every avenue, every day
of your life to get the same message through to you that you are
loved, loved beyond measure. The name Joshua
means "Jehovah is salvation." Jesus is the Greek form of the same
name. It is He that God has sent to get through to you.
He cares for you, and
has made provision for you to be with Him forever.
You see, you were made for Him and only He can satisfy
your heart.
