Grace
was beautiful. She was black and white, part German Shepherd and part Malamute.
During our walks together, Grace
would wander into every yard, exchange greetings with every other dog,
and investigate anything at all that peaked her
curiosity. I decided it would be preferable for her to stay beside me, so
I bought a leash.
On the next walk, although
excited about the anticipated adventure, Grace was obviously disappointed
with the
restrictions the leash presented. Occasionally
I would manage to communicate
my desires to her and she would walk beside me for a
short distance. Most of the
time however, her 75 pounds seemed much more as she strained at the leash
and literally pulled me along
behind her. As we neared
our house and the end of the walk, Grace began to display the opposite behavior
by resisting the
leash and then I was
dragging her. Although the pull of the leash had
almost choked her when she was pulling so far ahead
of me that she had to
struggle to breathe,
so now as she resisted, this strain also was quite uncomfortable. She knew
what she wanted and did
not yield easily. Her brief period of compliance was the only part of the
walk during which she was not
suffering discomfort. "Listen,
my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. I will
guide you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight
paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you
will not stumble. Hold on
to instruction, do not
let it go; guard it well, for it is your life." (Proverbs 4:10-13)
Why do we
keep knocking our heads against the wall, so to speak, and wonder why we
are hurting? We need to realize
that our heavenly Father
loves us and bids us come to Him through His Son
Jesus Christ, because it is only in Him that we can
have real life. (1 John 5:12) How much more of our life will we waste
doing things our own way when there is healing in Him?
