The
drive through the winding Louisiana country roads that evening would
have been no different from any other
except there was a light rain and the blacktop was a little slick. When
Sandy suddenly lost control of her car, she knew immediately
this could be really bad because the car was headed straight toward
the bayou. It all happened so fast she couldn't move
quickly enough to extricate herself from the sinking automobile.
It was too dark for her to see clearly, but there was one small
light and, as quickly as she could, she made her way to it. To her
surprise and great relief, surrounding the light was a small pocket
of air. She drew a deep breath and began making one trip after
another from the air pocket to the door handle and
then back again for more air. The light that showed her the way and the
precious air she was drawing into her lungs made survival possible.
Then, after what seemed like hours, she finally managed to
get the door open and swim to safety.
Listening to Sandy tell her story, I couldn't help but think
how much like life her
story is. Perhaps you are experiencing a time
of personal crisis, or maybe you are hurting because of
chronic difficult circumstances in your life. You may even be living in
quiet desperation. If this is where you are today I want to tell
you, not because of theory, but as a result of my own desperate searching,
that there is reality behind the picture here
of the light, the air, the door and the escape .
The light, even if it appears small to you right now, is enough
to point you in the right direction. Jesus said, "I am the light of the
world." John 9:5
The pocket of air near the light is a secret hiding place
where you can come to Him and cast your cares on Him. In this secret
place, as you meditate in His word and talk to Him in prayer,
it will be life to you as the precious air was to Sandy. As you continue
to do this He will continue to give you His peace and whether the
circumstances change or not, the One who loves you unconditionally
will wrap you up in His arms and
bring healing and comfort your heart.
The door is both of these. It is the way out of your
old life and into the new one God has for you.
Jesus said, "I am the door." John 10:9
The escape is when you actually take that step of faith and
turn from your old life and into the new, receiving by faith God's
offer of salvation by grace. "If any man is in Christ He is a
new creature. Old things have passed away, behold all things have
become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17.
The provision is there for you, whether you take it is your
choice.
