O
ne summer morning, while I was reading my Bible, I looked out my front window
and a movement caught my eye. A
beautiful little hummingbird approached the feeder. All of the other birds
I had watched had come to the feeder with their wings
fluttering a mile a minute. As they took quick sips of the red-colored nectar,
they kept a keen eye out for their fellow hummingbirds
who loved to swoop down upon them like miniature dive bombers and then off
they would fly. This little bird,
however, perched his minuscule feet solidly upon the tiny railing and looked
neither to the right nor to the left; but just sa t
there intent upon his feeding and drank to his heart's content. His focus
was on feeding, not on his potential problems. Not one bir d
attacked him.
It occurred to me as I watched this scene that many of us need
to learn a lesson from this little bird. We may be wounded inside
or have problems and be searching for answers. We read self-help books,
seek psychological help, talk to a friend, or
find countless other ways to try to cope. Some of these methods may help
some, but God offers us help that will bring true
healing and wholeness. God says, "They have forsaken me, the fountain of
living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns,
broken cisterns that can hold no water." (Bible Link:
Jeremiah 2:13) These other places
where we look for comfort and healing are those
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
The solution God offers is pictured in this little hummingbird
I was observing, not in the others who dart in and grab a quick drink
and dart off again to go and deal with their problems themselves. No, He
said we will find Him when we seek Him with all our
heart. (Jeremiah 29:13) This tiny little bird came in honesty and in
expectation of getting his need met and he kept drinking
until he was full, and he came back day after day the same way. We can do
the same thing with an open Bible and an open heart.
